The (MHRA) has issued a reminding parents to remove the cap from the SteriFeed colostrum collector before any use. This follows reported incidents of choking.

While the device鈥檚 intended use is solely for colostrum collection, the MHRA is aware
that it has been used for feeding colostrum directly to babies. This device is not designed for feeding.

The MHRA has received six reported incidents of choking on the cap of the device. No fatalities have been reported, however, one infant required emergency surgery.

The issue has been identified with the SteriFeed Colostrum Collector, manufactured by Medicare Colgate. It is used in colostrum harvesting.

Healthcare professionals are asked to:

  • Remove the purple cap before using the device. 
  • When instructing parents, carers, and users on using the device, remind them to always remove the cap from the tip of the syringe prior to use.
  • Advise parents, carers and users on how to feed harvested colostrum to the baby.
